Choosing the right dog can be overwhelming, as it is very important to find a dog that will fit into to your lifestyle and will bring joy into your life, rather than frustration. Whatever dog you choose to bring into your home, that dog will offer you unconditional love, and therefore deserves to have a home that he can feel safe and loved in as well.

Each and every dog has its own unique personality. And, with these unique personalities comes distinctive needs. It can be hard to determine which dog will best fit into your lifestyle and fit in with your own personality!

Questions to consider before bringing a new dog to your home:

Do you have children? If so, you will want a dog that is patient and playful.

Do you live in a home with a big yard? If not, you will need to consider options of how your dog will get the exercise he needs. (Especially bigger breeds)

Do you prefer big or small dogs?

Do you want a dog that is already house trained? Or do you want a puppy you can train yourself? There are benefits to both! Puppies are special in the fact that you can raise them and train them from the very beginning. Older dogs are great, just for the fact that you do not have to go through the joys of house training! Either way it is important to know which you prefer.

Do you want a dog that is calm and relaxed or one that is playful and rambunctious? This is important to know because if you want a dog that is playful and rambunctious, than you will need to be able to have the time to actually play with him and train him the rules. They cannot learn how to be good on their own! They need guidance and a lot of love and patience. If you want a dog that is calm and a great dog to cuddle up with at the end of the day, than you will not want to get one of those playful, rambunctious ones. This will only lead to frustration and an unhappy life for you and your dog.

After you decide what personality and size of dog you are looking for, then you need to decide what type of dog to get that are known to match the personality you are looking for in a dog. You will need to do your homework. Do not hastily make a decision without first doing as much research as you can on all of the different breeds. Of course, just because a breed is known for something, such as great with children, does not mean it is always the case. Each dog is unique and you will have to determine the right dog by physically meeting the dog or puppy. However, you can get an idea of which breed to check into through your research and through the questions you have answered from above.

After doing your research it is time to find your dog. There are many places to find a dog. Shelters are a great place to get a dog, as many of these dogs are loveable and really need homes. And, usually you can get a dog for a lot less than going to a pet shop. You could get your puppy from a house breeder. When choosing between a home breeder and a puppy mill or dog farm, it is highly recommended to stay away from the dog farms. Do your research on these types of places. Remember that many pet shops will get their dogs from puppy mills.

Once you have decided on where you want to go for your dog, you need to go and visit the puppy or dog. If you have children, it is a good idea to bring them along to see how the dog reacts with the children. If you decide on a puppy, and it is not time for him to come home, keep in touch and try to visit a couple more times to be sure he will be the perfect match for your home!

Once you have chosen your dog, then you will need to get the supplies for him before he comes home. Be sure to get a kennel, a dog dish, dog food, collar and leash, dog bed and maybe even a bandanna or dog coat! And, remember to have fun and just love your dog. He will be the most loyal friend you will ever have.

I have had pets all my life, I am a dog person. I absolutely love dogs. I understand the phrase; dogs are mans best friend. I believe that. Well, at least I believe they can be, with a little training.

I have had dogs that were housebroken and some that were not. Those that were made much better pets and those that were not soon were. You may be wondering how I did it, so I will explain. There are very basic steps involved in housebreaking a dog.

To begin it is wise to keep in mind that you are dealing with a friend. Treat him that way. Consider how you would treat a friend you were trying to teach something. Sort of makes you think about things differently, huh?

So this friend is from a place that does not use a bathroom like you and I do. He/she has not been taught to wait until the appropriate time to relieve himself, it is not an easy task to make such an adjustment. Some will learn quickly and others very slowly, you will need to be very patient.

You must realize that your furry friend will need relief first thing in the morning, immediately after a nap, after meals, late in the evening, and before retiring. Of course some dogs learn to adapt to a restricted schedule according to the time the owner is home. This can be rather cruel if a dog door is not installed.

Back to housebreaking, keep constant watch over your dog and when you catch him in the act in the wrong place scold him and lead him to the right place. When he relieves himself in the right place praise him. He will soon make the connection and your dog will be housebroken.

You will recognize signs that your dog needs to go out. He may begin walking in circles, or sniffing, he may stare at you, go to the door, or even bark at the door. Each dog is slightly different but you will learn what your dog is trying to tell you. Respond to his message as soon as possible.

Also, I suggest that you confine your dog to a small area at night so you do not have to worry about mishaps. Develop a schedule that works for you and your dog will eventually adapt to it. If possible you should install a dog door. This makes things more convenient for you and for your dog. I personally believe it is unrealistic to expect a dog to wait 8 or 9 hours to relieve himself while the owner is away at work.

I will just end with saying that dogs are wonderful companions if they are treated right. They want to please their owners; it is up to us to show them what we want in a way that they can understand.

Separation Anxiety In Dogs

Separation anxiety is one of the most common problems that dogs develop. Its an anxiety disorder, and is defined as a state of intense panic brought on by the dogs isolation or separation from her owner. In other words, when you leave for work in the morning, your dog is plunged into a state of nervous anxiety which intensifies extremely quickly. Dogs are social animals they need plenty of company and social interaction to keep them happy and content. No dog likes to be left alone for long stretches of time, but some dogs do a lot worse than others and these are the ones most prone to separation anxiety. There are a number of contributing causes to the condition.

Some breeds are genetically predisposed towards anxiety and insecurity, which is something you should consider when deciding which breed you are going to go for particularly if you are going to be absent for long stretches of time. A few of these breeds include Weimaraners, Springer Spaniels, German Shepherds, and Airedales. A significant proportion of dogs from shelters develop separation anxiety. Most of these shelter dogs have undergone significant trauma in their lives they have been abandoned by their previous owners and thus they have little trust that their new found owner.

Dogs that were separated from their mothers and siblings too early have been identified as being especially prone to separation anxiety. Puppies from pet stores are a perfect example of this. They are usually taken from their mothers well before the earliest possible age which is 8 weeks, and confined to a small glass box in the pet store for anywhere between a few weeks to two months. This early weaning, coupled with the lack of exercise and affection while in the pet store, is psychologically traumatic for the dog.

Neglect is the number one cause of sepration anxiety for dogs. If you are absent much more than you are present in your dogs life, separation anxiety is pretty much inevitable. Your dog needs your company, affection, and attention in order to be happy and content. The symptoms of separation anxiety are pretty distinctive. Your dog will usually learn to tell when you are about to leave, she wll hear keys jingling, will see you putting on your outdoor clothes, and will become anxious. She may follow you from room to room, whining, trembling, and crying. Some dogs even become aggressive, in an attempt to stop their owners from leaving.

When you have left, the anxious behavior will rapidly worsen and usually will peak within half an hour. She may bark incessantly, scratch and dig at windows and doors, an attempt to escape from confinement and reunite herself with you, chew inappropriate items, even urinate and defecate inside the house. In extreme cases, she might self mutilate by licking or chewing her skin until its raw, or pulling out fur or will engage in obsessive compulsive behaviors, like spinning and tail chasing.

Upon your return, she will be excessively excited, and will leap around you in a frenzy of delight for a protracted period of time more than the 30 seconds to one minute of a happy, well balanced dog. This extended greeting is a source of some misunderstanding without realizing that such a greeting actually signifies the presence of a psychological disorder, some owners actually encourage their dog to get more and more worked up upon their return by fuelling the dogs excitement, encouraging her to leap around, paying her protracted attention, and so on.

If you are behaving in this way with your dog, please stop. I know its tempting and very easy to do, and it seems harmless after all, she is so happy to see you, what harm can it do to return her attention and affection in equal measure? but in actuality, you are just validating her belief that your return is the high point of the day. So she is as happy as Larry when you return but, when its time for you to leave again, her now exaggerated happiness at your presence is under threat, and she gets even more unhappy when you walk out that door. Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimize your dogs tendency towards anxiety. Here is a short list of what to do.

Do exercise the heck out of her. Really wear her out, the longer you expect to be away, the more exercise she should get before you leave. For example, if you are leaving for work in the morning, she will probably be by herself for at least four hours and, if you have got a dog walker to take her out mid day instead of coming back yourself, she will not see you, the person she really cares about for at least nine hours. So she needs a good, vigorous walk fifteen to twenty minutes is the absolute minimum here, before you walk out that door. More is even better.

Distract her from her boredom, loneliness, and anxiety by giving her an attractive alternative to pining, pacing, and whining. All dogs love to chew, why not play on this predisposition? Get a couple of marrowbones from the butcher, bake them in the oven for 20 minutes so they go nice and hard and crunchy and so she can not smear marrow all over your furniture, slice them up into chunks of a few inches long, and give her one about 15 minutes before you leave. It will keep her happy and occupied, and will act as a smokescreen for your departure.

When you leave, put the radio on to a soothing station, classical music is ideal, but any station featuring lots of talk shows is also ideal. Keep the volume quite low, and it will calm her down a bit and give her the feeling that she has got company. If at all possible, supply her with a view. If she can see the world going by, thats the next best thing to being out and about in it.

Acclimatize her to your leaving. Taking things nice and slowly, practice getting ready to go, jingle your keys about, put on your coat, and open the door. Then without leaving sit back down and do not go anywhere. Do this until shes not reacting any more. When there are no reaction, give her a treat and lavish praise for being so brave. Next, practice actually walking out the door and returning immediately, again doing this until there are no reaction. Gradually work up, gradually being the operative word here until you are able to leave the house with no signs of stress from her.

Do not act overtly sympathetic when she is crying. Although it sounds very cold hearted, trying to soothe and comfort your dog by patting her and cooing over her is actually one of the worst things you can do. Its essentially validating her concern. Make sure she can not tell that you feel sorry for her, do not ever say, its ok, good girl when she is upset.

A Little Information About Flea Control On Your Pet

If you have a pet then you know all about fleas and flea control. Even though it is hard to keep your pet from going outside you are still going to have to take them outside sooner or later and they are going to get a flea or two on them. That is why you need to get a good type of flea control. If you are using the same brand every time then it obviously isn't working out for you. So you need to get some advice and get some better stuff for your dog or cat believe me they will love you for it. I just moved from Texas to South Florida and the minute that I left Texas my Dog had stopped scratching so much. When I got down here to south Florida I haven't seen a flea on him yet and I haven't even used any flea control since I have been down here. May sound weird but it's been almost 3 months now and he still may only have 1 flea.

The simple thing to do for you and your dog is either get your dog dipped in flea control, or you just go buy some really good flea control for your dog. You can go to pet smart and get any kind of flea control that you want and as long as it is expensive it will work all the other cheap kinds will not work I have tried them all I promise. So if you cannot find a good source of flea control from a pet store then you need to find other means of getting the stuff. You can go to your vet that you take your pet to and have them dip your pet in a flea control that will keep them good for a certain amount of time.

If that doesn't work the stuff that I use now is advantage. I think that is what it is called it works really good. I have a Pit Bull and his coat has never looked so good. He is tan with a white chest and he has never looked so good and healthy. He isn't scratching every 3 minutes now he is normally sleeping all day not doing anything else but sleeping all day long. He is a very rotten dog but he doesn't have fleas.

If you still cannot find what you are looking for then you just need to go online because they offer so much stuff online that you will be able to find something that is good online for a cheap good price. If you cannot find a good price on the internet for flea controls then I have no idea what to tell you other then just get the dip by your vet because it isn't getting any better or cheaper. You can take your pet to the vet and they will probably already know your vet so it will be easy to accomplish.
